#2 for Leonardo!

Leonardo Piepoli takes another tough stage at the Giro! Well done, indeed! I only hope the folks who sneer at the Lanterne Rouge at Le Tour will remember these impressive victories!

Congratulations Leonardo!

The cyclist who was the Lanterne Rouge for the first three stages of the 2005 Tour de France, Leonardo Piepoli of the Saunier Duval team, won the 13th stage of the Giro d'Italia from Alessandria to La Thuile on Saturday.

According to Velonews, he "has won just about every major mountain climb in Spain, including a stage victory in the 2004 Vuelta a España, but the veteran Italian climbing specialist had never won in the Giro d'Italia."

What a fabulous victory for an Italian cyclist, on what was from all accounts a very tough day! Well done, Leonardo!

Giro preview

The Daily Peleton previews the 2006 Giro d'Italia including the 2005 Tour de France Lanterne Rouge:

"Euskaltel-Euskadi is also bringing veteran attacker Iker Flores. Iker has two wins in his seven-year career, and they both came in the 2000 Tour de l'Avenir where he won a stage and the overall. In the 2004 Tour de France, he was an attacking maniac, taking 2nd on Stage 7 and going on some epic breaks in the Alps. Last year was an off year for Iker, and this was most evidenced by the fact that he was the Lanterne Rouge (a.k.a. dead last) in the 2005 Tour de France. This year Iker has ridden in the pack in some major stage races, and has sharpened his legs for a big ride in this Giro. Look for the tall, powerful, and friendly Basque to mix it up in the Belgian stages and then to launch some suicide missions in the high mountains."
