Lanterne Rouge updates

Iker Flores of Euskaltel-Euskadi finished in 91st position of 116 riders completing the 2006 Tour of Germany competition. He was not, however, a starter in the Vuelta d'Espana which began on August 27, 2006.

Jimmy Casper, 2001 and 2004 Tour de France Lanterne Rouge, is riding in the Vuelta d'Espana for the Cofidis team. (Update: He finished in 125th position out of 127 riders who completed the Vuelta.) However, Janeck Tombak is not riding on the 2006 Vuelta team.

Of our other contenders for the 2006 Tour de France Lanterne Rouge, Leonardo Piepoli of Saunier Duval is the only rider appearing in this year's Vuelta. (Update: He finished in 36th place out of 127 riders who completed the Vuelta.)

Jacky Durand, 1999 Tour de France Lanterne Rouge, weighed in on the recent EPO use allegations surfacing against Lance Armstrong stemming from 1999 samples: ""Why is this coming out now... It seems a little bizarre," he said. "I've got real doubts on the veracity of these accusations. All this is out of my realm of expertise, but this has thrown me for a loop."
